Caption: Space rescue ball. Astronaut holds a Personal Rescue Enclosure (PRE, white ball) designed for use on space shuttle missions. The rescue ball allows an astronaut to be carried from a crippled shuttle to a nearby rescue shuttle by a colleague in a space suit. The rescue ball has a diameter of 86 centimetres. It contains its own short-term life support and communication systems. It has 3 layers: one of urethane; one of kevlar; and an outer thermal protective layer. It also has a small window made of lexan. The ball was designed by the Johnson Space Centre's Crew Systems Division in the USA.
