Caption: Seeds of Stapelia variegata, a succulent, being shed from the pod (follicle). The seeds are packed in tightly (top left end) into the long (four inches) narrow pod. When the atmosphere becomes dry the pod splits open, releasing the seeds individually over a period of hours. Each seed is surrounded by a parachute of hairs, which unfurl & carry it away from the parent plant.
