Caption: Launch of the space shuttle Atlantis from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on May 4, 1989 at the start of mission STS-30. The mission included the deployment of the spacecraft Magellan into a low Earth orbit. The spacecraft's own rockets then launched it on a 15 month long journey to the planet Venus, where it will begin radar mapping operations. On board Atlantis were astronauts David M. Walker, Ronald J. Grabe, Mark C. Lee, Norman E. Thagard and Mary L. Cleave.
