Caption: Space Shuttle Columbia climbs away from the launch pad at the start of Mission STS-40 on 5 June 1991. The nine-day flight was devoted to the Spacelab Life Sciences SLS-1 module carried in the cargo bay. The seven crew members conducted a wide variety of experiments on their physiological conditioning to the microgravity environment in space. STS-40 ended with a safe return to Earth on 14 June 1991.
