Caption: Launch of Shuttle Endeavour, STS-54. Clouds of exhaust fumes cover the launch pad as Shuttle Endeavour leaves the ground at the start of Mission STS-54. This mission, which took place on 13-19 January 1993, had the primary task of deploying NASA's sixth Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-F). This having been successful, the satellite was re-named TDRS-6 (numbers are assigned only after a successful launch). This mission also carried the Diffuse X-ray Spectrometer (DXS) instrument, used to study X-rays from the interstellar medium. Its crew's tasks completed, Endeavour was flown back to Earth at the end of seven days in space.
