Caption: Start of Mission STS-51. Space Shuttle Discovery clears the launch tower at the start of Mission STS-51. The mission, which took place on 12-22 September 1993, carried a crew of five. The primary tasks of the mission were to launch NASA's Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS), and the deployment and retrieval of the ORFEUS free-flying astronomy package on its SPAS Shuttle Pallet Satellite carrier.
