Caption: Shuttle launch. Launch of the space shuttle Columbia from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA, at the beginning of mission STS-87 on 19 November 1997. Aboard were astronauts Kevin Kregel, Stephen Lindsay, Winston Scott, Kalpana Chawla, Takao Doi and Leonid Kadenyuk. Doi and Kadenyuk are Japanese and Ukrainian respectively. Doi was scheduled to make the first-ever Japanese spacewalk (Extra Vehicular Activity) during the mission. During the 16-day mission, the crew also performed research with the United States Microgravity Payload (USMP-4) and worked with Spartan 201, a satellite which is released from the shuttle to provide a platform for short-term experiments.
