Caption: Shuttle launch. Launch of the space shuttle Discovery from Cape Canaveral in Florida, USA, at the beginning of mission STS-91 on 2nd June 1998. Aboard were astronauts Charles J. Precourt, Jr., Dominic L. Gorie, Wendy B. Lawrence, Franklin R. Chang-Diaz and Janet L. Kavandi. Also on board, representing the Russian Space Agency (RSA) was Valeriy V. Ryumin. The mission was to dock with the Russian space station Mir and bring back Dr Andrew Thomas. Dr. Thomas was the last of seven astronauts assigned to a long-duration stay aboard Mir as a cosmonaut guest researcher. In total he was in space for 141 days.
