Caption: Space Shuttle Discovery and carrier. The Space Shuttle Discovery being transported by NASA's modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier aircraft. This flight was from the Dryden Flight Research Center in California, USA, to the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA, and took place on 19th August 2005. The Space Shuttles are designed to glide back down to Earth from orbit, but specialist airplanes are used to transport them from their landing places to their launch pad between missions.
