Caption: Germination of radish seeds Raphanus sativus, showing early (right) & later (left) stages of development. On the right the seed coat (brown), which surrounds & protects the seed prior to germination, is about to be discarded, whereas the seed on the left has already lost its coat. The two seed leaves (dicotyledons), which supply the germinating plant with nourishment until it can manufacture its own food through the leaves, open like two wings. The sturdy root grows out from the bottom while the shoot (not developed here) emerges through the centre of the seed leaves.
