Caption: Macrophotograph showing two germinating wheat seedlings at different stages of development. The top one shows the embryonic root or radicle only just beginning to emerge from the testa. In the second one the radicle has grown longer and its surface is covered with tiny fine hairs (root hairs) which increase the surface area of the root. There is also a lateral root beginning to appear at the base of the radicle. The radicle will eventually form a robust tap root which penetrates some depth into the soil. The function of these roots is to hold the plant firmly in the ground, and also to provide it with water and nutrients by absorbing them from the soil.
