Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a seedling of the cabbage Golden Acre, a brassica. The picture clearly shows the split seed coat (testa), & the root covered with root hairs. Root hairs are short-lived, delicate structures. Roots grow from the tip, & new hairs are continually produced from a region just behind it. The process is clearly visible here: near the root tip, the hairs are young & short; further away they are longer. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size. Yellow tint. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 4.2, page 68.
