Caption: Japanese astronaut on Shuttle Mission STS-65. Dr Chiaki Mukai, representing Japan's National Space Development Agency (NASDA), seen on the aft mid- deck of Shuttle Columbia during Mission STS-65. Dr Mukai, a physician, acted as payload specialist on the flight which carried the second International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-2) in its payload bay. IML-2 contained several experiments from Japanese Universities and research centres. Dr Mukai is seen here holding a cassette box containing bean sprouts, part of an experiment into how plant growth is affected by the microgravity conditions in orbit. STS-65 flew on 8-23 July 1994.
