Caption: Shuttle Atlantis. American Space Shuttle Atlantis as viewed from the Russian Space Station Mir during docking operations. In the opened cargo bay of the shuttle is the circular Orbiter Docking System (ODS), Spacehab module (at rear of shuttle) and the connective tunnel between them. The ODS is the device used to make the connection between the shuttle and the docking module on Mir. The Spacehab module is used as a space laboratory. Photographed on 23 March 1996 during shuttle mission STS-76 (22-31 March 1996). As part of this mission, Atlantis transported equipment and a new crew member, Shannon Lucid, from Earth to Mir. Lucid was to spend 140 days aboard Mir.
