Caption: Magnetic resonance image (MRI) of a five-week-old broad bean seedling growing in natural soil, showing the outline of the cotyledons (bulge in centre) and the developing root system (bottom). MRI (also known as nuclear magnetic resonance - NMR - imaging) allows scientists to see through the soil & container to study the roots without disturbing them. The image was produced at General Electric's Research Centre in Schenectady, New York, in collaboration with plant physiologists from the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Auburn.
