Caption: First Shuttle-Mir flight. Cosmonaut Anatoly Solovyev (left) taking over command of the Mir space station from Cosmonaut Vladimir Dezhurov. Solovyev was carried to the Russian space station on the US Shuttle Atlantis on the historic STS-71 mission of 27 June to 7 July 1995. This was the first time the Shuttle had docked with Mir. The crew for the Mir-19 mission were carried into space on the Shuttle, and the Mir-18 crew (including US astronaut Norm Thagard) were returned to Earth by Shuttle. Normally Mir crew exchanges are made using the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
