Caption: Mir astronaut. Portrait of Michael Foale (born 1957), the British-born American astronaut who was a crewmember of Mir, operating a video camera aboard the Russian space station. Foale was launched to Mir on a Space Shuttle on 15 May 1997. Mir spent more than four months on the space station, landing on 6 October. During his stay Mir was struck by an unmanned Progress supply vessel on 25 June. Foale and the 2 Russian cosmonauts successfully isolated Mir's Spektr module as it depressurized after the collision. This was Foale's fourth mission in space, and the second time that he had travelled to Mir. Photographed in Mir's Base Block module.
