Cosmonauts. Cosmonaut Valeriy V. Ryumin (left) from the space shuttle Discovery greets Mir commander Talgat A. Musabayev (right) after docking on mission STS-91. This mission lasted from 2-12 June 1998. This was the last in a series of nine Shuttle-Mir unions. It was the only time that Discovery was used to link up with Mir . The purpose of the mission was to retrieve astronaut Andrew S.W. Thomas and return him to Earth. Ryumin was joined on the mission by five astronauts, namely Charles J. Precourt, Frankilin Chenz-Diaz, Dom Gorie, Wendy Lawrence and Janet Kavandi.
