Caption: Astronaut uses treadmill. Astronaut Dr. Andrew Thomas on board the Kristall module of the Russian Mir Space Station. He is exercising on a specially designed treadmill. Straps are attached to his waste (centre) in order to counteract the effect of weightlessness in space. Dr Thomas spent 141 days in space. He was the last of seven NASA astronauts assigned to a long duration stay aboard Mir as a cosmonaut guest researcher. Dr Thomas was taken back to Earth in June 1998 by the space shuttle Discovery (mission STS-91).
