Caption: Coconuts, the fruit of the "tree of heaven", Cocos sp.. The coconut fruit is a fibrous drupe (not, botanically, a nut). The outer layer (pericarp) is tough & leathery, beneath which is the thick, fibrous mesocarp. The layer below, the endocarp, is the hard nutlike shell, with three black eyespots at the basal end. One of the spots is larger & softer & forms the exit point for the developing embryo. Inside the stony shell is the endosperm, a fleshy, edible layer which supplies the embryo with nutrients during development. Within the seed is a large cavity filled with coconut water.
