Caption: Seeds of the castor-oil plant, Ricinus communis. The mottled colour of these seeds acts to camou- flage and protect them from being eaten. Some insect eggs mimic the shape and colour of seeds to gain this protective advantage. Eggs of the stick insect Ectatosoma tiaratum (see Z310/013) are effective mimics of such plant seeds.
