Caption: Light micrograph of the seed of the European Orchid. Orchid seeds are extremely small and light. They contain a simple proembryo with no endosperm, which means there is no nutritional suppy for the seedling. In nature, the orchid seed has to be infected by a specific symbiotic fungus for germination and growth to take place. The seed's elongated shape and sculpted surface aid wind dispersal. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
