Caption: International Space Station (ISS). Artwork of the International Space Station in orbit over Europe with the European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) approaching for docking (background, at upper left). The ATV, launched by the European Ariane 5 rocket, is planned to deliver supplies on a regular basis to the ISS. The ISS is comprised of several different modules; the cylindrical European Columbus Orbital Facility or Attached Pressurised Module (at upper right) will be used for scientific research. At bottom centre is the conical European crew transfer vehicle intended to supply the Space Station with astronauts. The ISS should begin operation in June 2002.
