Caption: Orchid seeds. Light micrograph of a cluster of seeds of an unidentified orchid. Orchid seeds are extremely small, numerous and light. They contain a simple proembryo (dark area) with no endosperm, which means there is no nutritional supply for the seedling. In nature, the orchid seed has to be infected by a specific symbiotic fungus for germination and growth to take place. The seed's elongated shape and sculpted surface aid in wind dispersal. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
