Caption: Bean seedling. Bean seedling, Vicia sp., during germination. The bean (lower centre) is shown in the later stages of germination, with many lateral roots (at bottom centre) and unfolding leaves (at upper centre). The lateral roots develop from the main root, the first part of the bean to break through the seed coat. Their role is to anchor the seedling in the soil and collect water and minerals. The leaves grow away from gravity or towards light and are designed to use light to make food for the plant. The bean has laid dormant until the right combination of warmth, water and availability of oxygen caused germination.
