Caption: Star Wars research: William Barletta, program leader for beam research at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, standing in front of electrical equipment belonging to the Advanced Test Accelerator (ATA). The ATA is designed to accelerate a short, high intensity pulse of electrons to an energy of 50 MeV. Frequency of firing is limited to a 10 pulse burst every 2 seconds. A space-based accelerator which could produce a high-energy, particle beam that might disable distant objects (eg ballistic missiles) would be an integral part of America's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) - the "Star Wars" program.
