Caption: Mars Odyssey spacecraft. This image of NASA's Mars Odyssey spacecraft in orbit around Mars was taken by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft at a distance of 90 kilometres. It was the first image taken by a spacecraft of another spacecraft in orbit around a planet other than Earth. Mars Global Surveyor was launched in 1996 and reached Mars in September 1997. It imaged Mars' surface and studied its atmosphere and gravitational and magnetic fields. Mars Odyssey arrived at Mars in October 2001. It mapped the chemical elements and minerals that make up the planet's surface, finding large amounts of water ice under the poles. Image taken in April 2005.
