Caption: Harvesting crops in a self-sufficient ecosystem. In order to make interstellar space travel possible, it will be necessary, due to the large distances involved, for astronauts to maintain a self-sustaining environment. To do this they will need crops for food and to photosynthesise and produce oxygen from the carbon dioxide they breathe out. This Soviet experiment of 1967-1968 was an attempt to replicate an environment cut off from the surrounding world to see if it was possible to maintain it.
