Caption: Chernushka, Soviet space dog. Photographed on 11 March 1961, two days after Chernushka ("Blackie") had made an orbit of the Earth in the Sputnik 9 spacecraft on 9 March 1961. Chernushka orbited with mice, a guinea pig, and a cosmonaut dummy. The dummy was ejected safely during re-entry and returned to Earth using a parachute. Chernushka remained in the capsule, and was recovered unharmed. Sputnik 9 was the fourth spacecraft in a series designed as precursors to manned spaceflight. Just over a month later, on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin reached orbit in the Vostok 1 spacecraft, and became the first human in space. Photographed in Moscow, USSR.
