Caption: View of an A-type rocket, carrying a Vostok manned spacecraft, being prepared for launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in central Asia. The rocket has four liquid-propellant strap-on boosters surrounding a central main engine. The Vostok spacecraft was a sphere only 2.3 metres in diameter and carried one cosmonaut. The first man to fly in space, Yuri Gagarin, made his flight in Vostok 1 on 12 April 1961.
