Caption: Belyayev and Leonov (right), Soviet cosmonauts, in military uniform. Alexei A. Leonov (born 1934) performed the first ever spacewalk (extravehicular activity, EVA). This historic accomplishment was achieved during the Voskhod 2 mission of 18 March 1965. Leonov was the flight engineer. He became a celebrity in the Soviet Union and round the world. Pavel I. Belyayev (1925-1970) was the commander of the Voskhod 2 mission, his only space flight.
