Caption: Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968), Soviet cosmonaut, in his military uniform. Gagarin became the first person in space when he was launched in Vostok 1 on 12th April 1961. The spacecraft completed one orbit and the flight took 108 minutes. Gagarin became a hero in the Soviet Union, and became famous all around the world. He was killed in a plane crash in 1968, during training to go back into space. This is a Soviet postcard from around 1965.
