Caption: The crew of Soyuz-TM 12 in Moscow just before flying to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. The crew, from left to right, was: Anatloi Artsebarski, Helen Sharman and Sergei Krikalev. The military figure at far right is Alexei Leonov, former cosmonaut and current director of cosmonaut training at Moscow's 'Star City'. Soyuz-TM 12 was launched on 18 May 1991. Sharman was the first British person in space, spending seven days in the Mir space station. She was selected from 13,000 applicants to Project Juno, a joint UK- Russian mission. Krikalev gained world fame as the cosmonaut 'stranded' in space for 10 months due to the break-up of the former Soviet Union.
