Caption: Launch of Soyuz-TM18. A Russian SL-4 launcher climbs away carrying the Soyuz-TM 18 mission into orbit on 8 January 1994. The flight carried cosmonauts Viktor Afanasyev, Yuri Usachev and Valeri Poliakov to the Mir space station. Poliakov, a physician, remained on Mir for over 14 months; the others returned to Earth after six months. The SL-4 launcher has been used for all Soviet & Russian manned flights since 1964, and for many other science and military satellites. Over 1000 SL-4 launches have been recorded.
