Caption: Mir burning up. Computer artwork of the Russian space station Mir burning up as it re-enters the Earth's atmosphere. After 15 years in orbit, its planned re-entry on March 23, 2001, resulted in its break-up over the Pacific Ocean. Mir was launched in February 1986 and spent 15 years in orbit around the Earth, being used to carry out numerous scientific experiments.
