Caption: First spacewalk by an ESA astronaut. ESA and German astronaut Thomas Reiter (centre) performing a spacewalk during his 1995 mission to Mir, the Russian space station. This was the Euromir 95 mission (3 September 1995 - 29 February 1996). Reiter carried out two spacewalks during this mission. The first, on 20 October 1995 involved installing experiments on the Spektr module. The second, on 8 February 1996, was to the ESEF and Kvant 2 modules. During the course of the mission, Reiter carried out some 40 experiments, and also helped the Russian crew of two to maintain the space station.
