A computer-generated mannequin, an exact representation of the human form in terms of proportions & flexibility, simulates a Hermes astronaut entering a spacesuit. Many alternative designs for the suits, which allow astronauts to work outside in space, can thus be compared economically. Hermes, the European Space Agency's re-usable spaceplane, has a launch weight of 22 tonnes including a 3 tonne payload and crew of three. It will be placed in low earth orbit by an Ariane 5 rocket.
