Hermes will be 15 metre long, 11 metre across and will weigh 22 tonnes. It will be lifted into a low earth orbit, along with it's crew of 3 and a 3 tonne payload, by an Ariane 5 launcher (seen here beneath the triangle-shaped spaceplane). The first (unmanned) test flight is scheduled for 1998. Two Hermes are to be built; each is expected to under- go around 30 flights over a 15 year working life.
