This image is part of the sequence Flowers: Germination of a soya bean into a plant

Caption: Soya bean germination. Stages of germination and vegetative development of a soya bean plant (Glycine max). The seed or bean (far left) sends up a shoot, which emerges through the soil during the 'crook' or 'cracking' stage (second from left). The first leaves (cotyledons) emerge during the VE stage (third from left) at 3 or more days after planting. The cotyledons unfold and the first true leaves start to develop during the VC stage (third from right) 3-5 days after emergence. During the next stage, V1 (second from right), the first unifoliate leaves are fully developed. During the final stage, V2 (right), the first trifoliate leaves are fully developed.
