Caption: Envisat-1. Artwork showing the use of two of the 11 instruments aboard the European Envisat-1 Earth observation satellite. The green square represents the use of the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) which makes either large scale, broad swath images covering 400x400km squared or high- resolution images covering 100x100km squared. The blue lines represent the Michelson Interferometric Passive Atmospheric Sounder (MIPAS) which can detect and measure trace gases in the atmosphere. ENVISAT-1 is due to be launched in mid-1998.
