Artist impression of the TIROS-M weather satellite (renamed ITOS-1 once in orbit), a 682 pound weather eye carrying delicate sensors for taking cloud cover photographs during the day & night. Previous satellites were restricted to daytime coverage. This photograph demonstrates how the satellite will take nighttime (infrared) cloud cover photographs. The satellite will orbit at 900 miles above the Earth. ITOS-1 was launched on the 23rd January 1970 & deactivated on June 17th 1971.
