Caption: Optical checks being made to the reflectors of the Laser Geodynamics Satellite, LAGEOS-2. This is a co-operative project between NASA and the Italian space agency, ASI. LAGEOS-2 will enter a 6,000km circular orbit, allowing coverage of the seismically active Mediterranean area. The surface of the 60cm diameter satellite has 426 equally- spaced retro-reflectors. Laser beams from 10 fixed and 16 mobile ground stations will track the satellite giving very precise measurements of position. This will allow the study of the motion of the crust associated with plate tectonics and volcanism. LAGEOS-2 is manifested for launch on Shuttle STS-52 in November 1992.
