Caption: CryoSat satellite launch. The European Space Agency's CryoSat satellite launching from Russia on 8th October 2005. The satellite is aboard a converted intercontinental ballistic missile. Minutes after lift off a failure in the launch system led to the rocket and satellite crashing back to Earth, landing in the Arctic Ocean north of Greenland. The satellite was intended to measure, and then monitor, changes in the thickness of polar ice sheets and floating sea ice, in an effort to determine the affects of global warming.
