Caption: Space junk. 18 centimetre wide metal object that fell from space in October 1999, destroying the roof and window of a house in Oberhausen, Germany. Tens of thousands of man-made objects are in orbit around the Earth, remnants left by the many space missions carried out since the 1950s. These objects present a hazard, both to future space missions and, if they re-enter its atmosphere, to property on Earth.
