Solar sail spaceship at Saturn, computer artwork. This theoretical vessel has a flower-like array of solar sails (purple and green). It would use these thin, sail-like membranes to sail using sunlight. The accumulative pressure from the reflection of countless photons of light, emitted by stars such as our Sun, would gradually impart momentum to the spacecraft. The acceleration would be very low but continuous, eventually allowing very high speeds to be attained. This could allow travel to the outer planets.
