Caption: Asteroid deflection. Computer artwork of a rocket being used to deflect an asteroid from its impact course with Earth. This technique would land the rocket on the asteroid, securing it to the surface and then using its rocket motors to deflect the asteroid on to a different course. Such a rocket would require several months to create the needed deflection, but would only need to create a tiny change in the course to make the asteroid miss by many thousands of kilometres. This is just one of many possible asteroid deflection techniques. The technique chosen depends on the nature of the NEO (Near Earth Object).
