Caption: Deep ocean aliens. Artwork of alien life forms adapted to survive on a deep ocean seabed. A hydrothermal vent (centre) releases heat energy and mineral nutrients. Surrounding it are a community of organisms that resemble species found on Earth, such as tube worms and crustaceans. A planet or moon with liquid water and deep ocean geothermal activity, such as may exist on the Jovian moon Europa, could harbour such life forms. Sunlight cannot reach such depths hence energy and nutrients are derived from heat and minerals released by hydrothermal vents.
