Fuel cell. Researcher using a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) to power a traffic light. The DMFC is a chemical reactor that converts methanol and water into electricity. DMFCs are more efficient and cleaner than normal batteries. They last longer and weigh less for the amount of energy that they provide. The waste products of this fuel cell are water and a small amount of carbon dioxide, making it more environmentally friendly than existing batteries and fossil fuel engines. This is the first portable DMFC, allowing it to be used for powering demanding items such as laptop computers and other hardware. It has been made by Smart Fuel Cell Ltd, Munich, Germany.
