Off-shore gas platforms. Natural gas, consisting mainly of the gases methane and ethane, is formed by the breakdown of organic matter. It occurs mainly at the top of oil wells, or in wells of its own. Drilling rigs are used to drill beneath the seabed to reach pockets of natural gas. The drilling rig is then replaced with one or more production platforms that are usually anchored to the seabed. Production platforms bring the natural gas to the surface from where it is piped to the mainland. Photographed off the coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf.
