Caption: North European gas pipeline construction. Also known as Nord Stream, this is a natural gas pipeline being built from Russia to Germany, passing under the Baltic Sea. Natural gas is a fossil fuel obtained from underground oil and gas deposits. This section of the pipeline is the overland section in Russia. This section runs from near Vologda (several hundred kilometres north of Moscow) to the coast at Vyborg. This section will be 917 kilometres long. Construction began on 9 December 2005 and is scheduled for completion in 2010. Photographed in Russia's Vologda region in April 2006.
